Commercial building inspectors conduct inspections on all commercial buildings, structures and equipment including:
- new construction of commercial and multi-family buildings (including apartments)
- additions/alterations/repairs to existing commercial and multi-family buildings
- additions/alterations/repairs to foundations of existing commercial and multi-family buildings
- other structures, such as outdoor/picnic shelters, utility sheds, etc.
Prior to any new construction, demolition, addition or alteration to any part of a building, structure or equipment, it is important to ensure that a permit has been obtained prior to starting any work.
City inspectors review the following aspects of construction:
- structural and non-structural building framing
- interior and exterior building finishes
- barrier-free design and accessibility
- building life safety systems
- building fire safety
- building demolition and public protection site provisions
Note: The above list is not inclusive, nor is it intended to exclude any other type of construction and/or installation of equipment. An inspection is required before any building construction or portion thereof is concealed and at final completion.
Mandatory Inspection Stages
You must request an inspection at completion of each of the following stages when applicable to your project:
- foundation
- structural framing
- interior framing
- exterior finish
- interior finish
- building final
Multiple progress inspections may be required at each mandatory inspection stage based on the size and progress of the project.
Note: Progress inspections are mandatory prior to requesting occupancy.
