Stay hydrated
- Drink at least five glasses of water per day
- Limit alcohol intake
Make healthy food choices
- Improves overall health
- Prevents disease and injury
Go for regular medical check-ups
- Helps identify if you are at higher risk of falling
- Doctor or pharmacist can review medications and risks
- Identifies if you need eyeglasses or hearing aids
Remove trip hazards
- Remove potential trip hazards from both inside and outside your home
- Move books, shoes, clothing, telephone cords, etc. that may be in walking areas and stairways
- Ensure sidewalks and outdoor steps are clear of snow and ice
- Ensure rugs have non-skid backings
- Ensure carpets and area rugs are not puckered, torn or worn
Reduce the risk of slipping in the bathroom
- Place non-slip mats in bathtubs and showers
- Place grab bars in tubs, showers and near toilets
- Wipe up all spills immediately
Wear proper footwear
- Wear shoes with non-slip soles
- Avoid high heels, slippers
- Use cane or walker for added support and stability
Have proper lighting
- Use night lights to light path between your bedroom and bathroom
- Turn lights on before using stairs
- Ensure every room has a light switch that is accessible from the doorway
Make your stairwell safer
- Install hand rails on both sides
- Make sure the area is well lit
- Add rubber mats if the floor is slippery
Detecting slips and falls
Detecting falls early can help prevent injuries. Detect falls early by:
- Using fall detection products
- Checking in with family and friends regularly
- Keeping your phone with you, or close by
What to do if you slip and fall
If you fall, take a moment to catch your breath and check if you are injured.
If you are not injured, follow these steps to get up safely:
- Lie on your side
- Bend the leg that is on top and lift yourself onto your elbows or hands
- Pull yourself toward a sturdy object
- Kneel, while placing both hands on the object
- Place your stronger leg in front, holding on to the object
- Stand up
If you are injured and need help:
- Press the button on your fall detection device if it hasn't gone off
- Call 9-1-1
